Air, Sea, or Express? Choosing the Right Shipping Method for Used Mobile Stock
The shipping method you choose for bulk mobile device exports affects your cost, your transit time, and ultimately the value you recover. Here is how to decide.

Why Shipping Method Matters More Than You Think
Used mobile devices depreciate continuously. A lot of iPhones worth £50,000 today may be worth £47,000 in six weeks. The cost of slow shipping is not just freight — it is the value erosion of your stock in transit. Choosing the right shipping method is a financial decision, not just a logistics one.
Air Freight
Air freight is the fastest option — typically 3–5 business days from Europe or North America to Hong Kong. It is also the most expensive per kilogram. For high-value stock (Grade A/B iPhones, recent Samsung flagships), air freight is usually justified because the speed preserves value and enables faster payment. The breakeven calculation: if air freight costs £500 more than sea but gets you paid 4 weeks earlier, the opportunity cost of delayed capital often favours air.
Sea Freight
Sea freight makes sense for very large volume shipments (pallets of lower-value devices) where the per-unit freight cost justifies the 4–6 week transit time. For high-value mixed lots, sea freight introduces risk — longer transit means more time for market price movements to affect the final settlement.
Express Courier
DHL, FedEx, and UPS express services work well for smaller lots (under 30kg). Fast, trackable, and insurable. For initial trial shipments or high-value low-volume lots (e.g. 50 iPhone 15 Pro units), express courier is often the most practical option.
